5 Things To Do When The Internet Is Out

Thanks to a minor wind storm (and possibly some damage from a slightly careless tree removal person), our household is experiencing cable internet difficulties the likes of which will probably not get resolved until Tuesday (hopefully).  In the meantime, rather than trying to finish off a mission or two in the brief periods of time in which the connection is good, I thought it would be a good idea to consider a few things that can be done without the internet.

  1. Play A Game – You did go out and buy a Doctor Who Yahtzee set, well, you may as well break it out.  Playing a game with the family or with friends can help pass the time while you are waiting for the repair crew to show up.  If you need any suggestions for games to play, check out Wil Wheaton’s YouTube show TableTop on the Geek & Sundry Channel (when you have an internet connection, naturally).
  2. Read a Book – You know what has all the thrills of the internet without needing all the modem lights lit up?  Reading.  Books can take you into another world of adventure and excitement without even needed electricity… unless you have a Kindle or Nook, then you will need electricity at some point.  If you’re like me, you have tons of books just lying around waiting to be read.  If not, take a trip to your local library and check something out.
  3. Go Somewhere – While we are getting out of the house to go to the library, why not just get out of the house for a bit.  Go to the movies, go to the mall, go to the park.  Just get out of the house and away from the computer and the lack of a stable connection.
  4. Write Something – Do you have that one inkling of a story that has been nagging you forever, but you keep pushing it aside because your hunter is about to level?  Well, since you cannot complete a mission without your connection dropping faster than Facebook stock.  Even if it is some odd shipper combining Firefly, Stargate SG-1 and Quark (the short-lived TV series, not the Deep Space 9 Ferengi bartender), then do so… just… don’t show anyone that… please?
  5. Talk to Someone – Since you can’t update your Facebook status, why don’t you talk to a friend and ask them what’s going on.  Who knows, you might find it much more interesting than posting inane updates about what you are doing.
