Saturday Songs – July 28, 2012
I have to admit, I am not a baseball fan. I find the game slow and boring. But, I am a fan of a good laugh. And one of the best comedy teams ever has to be Abbott and Costello.
Surprisingly, one of their finest routines has to do with baseball, which is, as I said, one of my least favorite sports. Who’s On First is a masterpiece of double talk (mostly from Bud Abbott) and confusion (mostly from Lou Costello). While the routine is derived from other play on words routines performed on the vaudeville circuit, it was Abbott and Costello who honed it to perfection. The routine lives on in recordings and film.
Audio versions of the routine are available on iTunes. The routine was also featured in the film Naughty Nineties, available on DVD from Amazon.com, and as part of The Abbott & Costello Show, the complete series DVDs also available on Amazon.com.
