I’ve begun to take the first steps towards rewriting one of my National Novel Writing Month projects. To be specific, it is the one I wrote two years ago based off a comic idea that I have had for quite some time.
I have toyed with the work in the past, tweaking pages and chapters here and there. This time, I’m thinking complete rewrite, or at least a near complete rewrite. I may lift some chapters from the original draft to move the story along, and come back to them later.
One thing is definite, the basic concept of the story will remain the same. It will still be about a super team’s first major battle against a major super villain. From that, I plan of branching out the adjustments and changes to the story. Some I already have in mind, others I need to consider.
For one thing, the story has a lot of characters. Part of this is because of the nature of the super team, and the super villain they face. Part is also because as I was writing the story originally, the main story began to fall short, and I needed to make the 50,000 word count for the month. The end result is that some characters appears only a couple of times, while others are introduced in the “second act” of the story.
One of these second act characters is a bit troublesome, too. The character is actually five characters, each one with their own set of powers (think Crazy Jane from Doom Patrol… but not quite so many personalities). Do I split him into five characters, or really play up the multiple personality angle on it. This can be tough since I don’t have much experience with the syndrome.
Other details I want to work in that I did not do before. A few of these are linked to one of the characters, a power augmenter and copier. The most major of these details are how his powers work. The character in question has existed for quite some time for me (he was a roll-up from the old Marvel Super Heroes Role Playing Game), but in writing this book, I finally got a good idea of how his powers work. Now, my challenge is to show this without being so blatant about it.
As I progress with the rewrite, I will post details here, possibly with sample chapters as well. Furthermore, I may ask for opinions about some of the things that end up sticking me, being a pain in my rewrite.
