Picks of the Week – May 30, 2012

It’s the Wednesday after Memorial Day.  Remember the olden days when a Monday holiday potentially meant that comics were coming in Thursday?

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

Batman Annual #1 (DC Comics) – In this Night of the Owls tie-in, we learn the origin of the New 52 version of Mister Freeze.  This time around, he has a closer connection to Bruce Wayne, and that isn’t the only shocking change.

Animal Man Annual #1 (DC Comics) – In this issue, we take a side from the battle with the Rot as Maxine has a little history lesson.  It’s 1895, and the events of the present day are playing out in the past.  The issue is similar in vain to the Times Past issues of the classic Starman series, looking at events of the past to expand the present story.

Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation Squared #1 (IDW) – (Pardon the spell out since I’m not sure how to get superscript here.)  The Borg have attacked the Federation Planet of Delta IV, except they are acting quite un-Borg-like, and they are accompanied by… Cybermen???  Meanwhile, the Doctor and the Ponds (or the Williamses, depending on who you ask) find themselves landing in pre-World War 2 San Francisco… or do they?  Personally, this series, bringing together Star Trek with my favorite Time Lord, is the one that I have been waiting for.

America’s Got Powers #2 (Image Comics) – Powerless Tommy Watts has grown up in the shadow of his super-powered older brother.  Now, he has shown himself to be just as powerful as his fallen brother.  Can the organizers of America’s Got Powers get him to fight in their arena, and what is the secret of the fallen super-powered combatants of America’s Got Powers?
