Picks Of The Week – August 31st, 2011
This is the week, the week when DC’s New 52 begins. so, let’s jump right into the “small comics week and I got hit by a hit and run driver” picks of the week.
WARNING: Spoilers may be ahead.
Flashpoint #5 (DC Comics) – The first of DC’s two releases this week, this issue wraps up the whole Flashpoint event. At the end of issue #4, we saw the appearance of Flash arch-villain Zoom. Even more shocking than Zoom’s appearance is the whole cause of the Flashpoint event, and the sacrifice that the Flash must make to fix everything.
Justice League #1 (DC Comics) – DC’s other release this week, and the first issue of the new 52. Justice League sets up the world Post Flashpoint, beginning five years ago before there was a Justice League. The issue, wonderfully drawn by Jim Lee and written by Geoff Johns, puts into place the elements that will lead to the eventual formation of the Justice League, taking its time to set things up, beginning with the first meeting between Batman and Green Lantern. A lot has been speculated about the New 52, but if other titles are as good as this one was, then a lot of the fears will be unfounded.
The Vault #2 (Image Comics) - The second issue of this moini-series picks up right where the first left off, with our intrepid team trying to figure out what it in the vault. The issue builds brilliantly to an explosive end that leaves you wanting more and eager for the third and final issue.
Angel & Faith #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – Joss Whedon’s vampire with a soul pairs with our favorite renegade vampire slayer as Angel moves to Dark Horse Comics. The series picks up after the events in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, leaving the world cut off from magic. Angel, with the help of Faith, is left to make amends for his actions as Twilight. This series sets up what made the Angel TV series so good, a vampire with a soul seeking redemption for his past sins.
