Picks of the Week – August 2nd
Here are just a few of the comic titles worth mentioning this week.
Ultimate Fallout #4 (Marvel) – This is the issue that introduces the new Spider-Man, probably the internet’s worst kept secret. The new Spider-Man’s introduction to the world is the strongest part of the story, with some of the humor that has always been a part of the Spider-Man storylines.
Punisher #1 (Marvel) – Frank Castle returns to the Marvel universe under the guidance of writer Greg Rucka and artist Marco Checchetto. The book recaptures the grittiness of the old Punisher titles and is easily the strongest of the three recent relaunches (Moon Knight and Daredevil being the other two).
Batman Knight of Vengence #3 (DC Comics) – Undeniably the best of the Flashpoint tie-ins, issue 3 picks up right from the stunning ending of issue 2. Brian Azzarello does a brilliant job weaving the tragic story of Flashpoint’s Batman and Joker.
Rachel Rising #1 (Abstract Studio) – Terry Moore pulls you right into the story of Rachel Beck, who we first meet as she rises from a shallow grave.
Superman #714 (DC Comics) – J. Michael Straczynski’s Grounded storyline wraps up Superman until September’s reboot as the Man of Steel is asked, “Must there be a Superman?”
Severed #1 (Image Comics) – Set in 1916, Severed weaves the tale of a young boy and the nightmare that is about to take over his life. the story builds to the issue’s conclusion like a well crafted horror movie.
