What To Do For The Next Green Lantern Movie (Spoilers)
There has been a lot of talk about whether or not there will be a sequel to Green Lantern. While I do have to admit that Green Lantern was good, but not great, I still think that there should be a sequel. Mostly, this is on the grounds that there is the potential for a really good Green Lantern 2 if certain things are one right.
First, there needs to be a better villain. Parallax had the potential of being a good multi-film badass, but Hector Hammond was not a good choice for a villain. Even in the comics, Hammond is not all that great, taking a back seat to other GL villains like Black Hand, Evil Star and Goldface. Heck, Hammond was even defeated by Firestorm alter ego Professor Martin Stein, who usually shows up as a disembodied head that only Firestorm can see.
While the obvious choice for GL2′s villain is Sinestro, the best choice would actually be the Manhunters. The Manhunters plot would be pretty straight forward, with Hal Jordan encountering
one on Earth, learning of other Manhunter attacks on GL’s, and the ultimate Manhunter assault on Oa.
Surprisingly, as big as thousands of robots attacking Oa can be, this would actually be the secondary plot of the movie. The primary plot would deal with Sinestro’s struggles to resist using the yellow ring, and his eventual downfall to its power. He had a taste of its power in the first movie. Now as he
continues to fight evil as a Green Lantern, he is almost taunted by the power of the yellow ring. And with the assault of the Manhunters, Sinestro finds it even harder to resist using its fearsome (pun intended) power. GL2 would end with Sinestro giving into the yellow ring’s power. He manages to stop the Manhunters with its power, but refuses to relinquish the ring. He and Jordan fight to a near stalemate, and though Jordan comes out on top, Sinestro flees, setting him up for the main villain of GL3.
Lastly, the producers and writers must resist the urge to “over-villain” the second movie. This means that trying to bring in the Star Sapphires as villains should remain for another movie. The Manhunters,
along with the downfall of Sinestro, is more than enough movie to film without trying to bring in Carol Ferris as Star Sapphire.
